The Camas County Logo. A broken circle with the Soldier Mountains in the upper left, the Camas Lily in the upper right, a snowflake in the lower left, and a silhouette of a bird. The words Camas are at the top of the circle and County at the bottom of the circle.

Camas County, established in 1917, is named after the camas root, a lily-like plant with an edible bulb that was a vital food source for Native American tribes, particularly the Shoshone and Paiute. The name “Camas” was chosen to honor this historical connection to the land’s natural resources.

Today, Camas County remains primarily agricultural, with farming and ranching as its main economic activities. The county also features the Soldier Mountain ski area, which opened in 1948, attracting visitors to the Soldier Mountains. The county seat, Fairfield, continues to be known for its rural charm and natural beauty, including its proximity to the Sawtooth National Forest.
